Which devices are ELD compliant devices?

The following devices are ELD compliant Devices:

Final Rule or Another Delay

The FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) issued the 2015 release of its very own rule. The rule is supposedly final. The Rule is going to implement electronic logging devices in every commercial vehicle. Ever since the rule went into effect, a lot of questions started floating around. Most of the time there are more questions than answers.

The Administration made numerous attempts to push the rule through. However, until now the attempt met enough resistance to delay the ruling.  The numerous delays in implementation of ELD compliant devices made everyone doubtful. Truck drivers and trucking companies owners, did not believe that the ruling will go through. The disbelief had made both parties not ready for the ELD mandate.

The Final Rule and Support

Now, ELD Compliant Devices require a lot of different things. There is a final rule which specifies that there is an eight-day timeframe for replacing or repairing a malfunctioning device. There are a few things that you would want to keep in mind here as it is not exactly certain whether there are replacements that could be handled in time.

So, for the carriers who are going to need more than those eight days to get an ELD replaced, the rule has also spelled out serious regulations for the process which allows them to request more time. It involves contacting the FMCSA division office and to make sure that your case is proper.

FMCSA Registry

Now, technically speaking, compliant devices have to be on the registry of the Administration. The agency has a challenging yet comprehensive vetting process which doesn’t really entail testing for the compliance.

With this said, it is important to understand that it relies heavily on the manufacturers to self-certify that they are capable of meeting the rule specifications. Now, this is something which has obviously prompted a worry amongst a lot of different motor carriers, which are concerned about the consequences which would follow if their own device is not found to be compliant. The FMCSA’s website is addressing something in relation to this scenario. The Agency states that: “FMCSA will work with affected motor carriers to establish a reasonable timeframe for replacing non-compliant devices.”

At this particular stage, it is quite obvious that part of the entire challenge which revolves around the initial registry is the automatic onboard recording devices that are meeting rather minimal requirements. These are stacked against devices who are essentially superior. The rules note that absolutely any carrier which has installed an AOBRD before this year’s ELD mandate could use this device until the end of the year 2019.

This suggests that the enforcement of the requirement to use registry-listed device is unlikely to happen before that time. This is especially true for carriers who are actually complying with the ELD rule and they are installing e-log prior to the 18th of December. Therefore, the registry’s importance for the carriers who are choosing ELD compliance devices at this particular stage could be noted as rather minimal and practically non-existent.

Of course, when it comes to ELDs, there are a lot of questions which arise, especially about whether or not you should be the one who’s going to implement them prior to the mandate. While a lot of truckers tend to believe that it’s not really necessary, it’s important to note that this is something which could potentially deliver a serious amount of value.

Right off the bat, you’d have additional and more time to ensure that you get ahead of the game. That is to say that while others are implementing devices of the kind in order to inevitably meet the regulatory provisions, you’d be pulling further ahead, and making sure that everything is handled as per the highest industry standards.

In other words, you’d have time. This is something rather invaluable. This time would enable you to perfect the logging process, allowing your entire fleet to be far more efficient. Keep in mind that this is something that would entirely disrupt the industry and there is likely to be a steep learning curve. This is something that you ought to account for.

By going ahead and making sure that everything is handled properly, you would be able to guarantee that you receive the maximum value of the disruption. It is in times like this that you’d be able to draw as much as you can.

Keep in mind that there are a lot of different ELD compliant devices on the market. Even though there is yet some time for the mandate to become official, companies are starting to implement ELDs in their fleets because of the reasons that we stated above.

Due to the large number of companies , the market remains competitive. Further, many companies decided to alleviate a lot of the upfront cost. Instead, they break them down into bearable and manageable monthly fees. Those fees would be billed under a subscription-based retainer. It’s as easier on both drivers and fleet owners.

In concolusion, it is also important to note that the learning curve is far from being as challenging as you may think. You would need a few days to get fully accustomed to using a service of the kind and that’s going to be more than enough.

As results, you would start experiencing the numerous benefits which stem from having an ELD device installed and attached to your truck. You can say goodbye to the long nights of logging HOS and mileage manually on flying paper sheets.
